UNESCO's
HUL
approach in
South Asia

In 2011 UNESCO recommended a holistic approach to conserve the culture and character of the fast-developing historical settlements. The approach known as Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach is an integrated approach to conserve cultural landscape by incorporating urban planning and heritage conservation with socio-economic development and local cultural practices. Under the aegis of UNESCO New Delhi office and support by Madhya Pradesh government, Dharatal embarks upon an attempt to contextualize this approach for South-Asian cities. We will be working on the application of HUL approach on the historical settlements of Gwalior and Orchha in Madhya Pradesh. The project aims to engage the stakeholders, undertake capacity building of the local authorities and empower community-led practices in order to enrich the cultural landscape and manage heritage areas in the settlements.
